With so many ways to measure greatness, there might be more than one answer....Sweetness was superb. Barry Sanders or Earl Campbell may have been blessed with more talent. OJ was ahead of the rest of the game during his time. As was Jim Brown (though I think OJ would not do as well against modern offenses, and Jim Brown would crush them). Since JB left the game early, it is hard to know! He might have set records that would be unbeatable!! And good old Emmit Smith-the guy was like the second coming of Payton-super reliable, and very tough to have lasted as long as he did.

Jim Brown. 118 games, 126 TD's, 12,312 yds, 5.2 yds per carry was the greatest NFL running back to play the game. No disrespect to Barry Sanders, Walter Payton and others, he was just better!

No one was better than Barry Sanders. He was the whole team. If not for him the Lions lucky to win halve as many games as they did. If he'd have played as long as he could have he would have had 2-3 thousand more yards than Emmitt.

Marshall!! Marshall!! Marshall!
If not for playing on the two worst playing surfaces in the NFL, he would be un-injured and you would not need to ask this question. The proof would be in the pudding.
Excellent pass-catcher out of the backfield, breaks tackles, and was nearly impossible to tackle from 1997-2002.
