I'm 21 and only 5'0"-5'1" and I want to get into modeling, but I don't know where to start. (Besides making a porfolio). I'm afraid since I'm so short, no one will take me. (Just extra info, I'm in the Va Beach area.) Oh, I want to do real modeling, not things like lingerie!

Anyone can be a model, mesurements are flexable, as long as they have the right attitude and are happy with the work, and don't expect overnight success. If you are actually thinking about it here is some advise.

I have heard a lot of bad thing about SOME (not all) modelling agencies and how they make you pay for photos and photo sessions before they take you on then never give you any work. Always check with the local Better Business Bureau.

I think a better starting place before you go to agencies is if you have a friend who is reasonable with a camera (do not have to be a professional or even that good just okay) Just take 100 photos of yourself in different poses, clothing and backgrounds then pick out 10-20 nice photos. You can then use this as a portfolio, and even better instead of printing them which cost you money every time, host them on a website and get some business cards print with the website address on and just hand these out instead. This is a far cheaper way of doing it and with no RISK. You should never have to pay to get a job if you do there is a high chance it is a scam.

However if you would like a personal portfolio site please contact me and I will set you on up for free. I can design you a fully personalised flash website with as much or little information and then host it for you. This site can contain a gallery of your photos, personal information, list of work, contact details, etc or if you prefer just a couple of photos and nothing else. It can be password protected and all images will be protected as is humanly possible, or the photos can be available to download.

Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. You will have complete control and the site can be removed or changed at any time. This is not a scam and I will design a site for FREE, I do not need the money, and enjoy working. If you do want it message me you can tell me what you want and how you want it done and I will help.

Try to get in an agency that lists "petite" as a type of modeling category that they represent. Even Print models in most big name agencies have to be 5'6'' or taller, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. If you want to get into modeling you can ask photographers to do TFP shoots with you to gain experience and a book, or you can simply take snapshots in a bathing suit with hair back and little makeup and submit them to agencies. As far as the TFP shoots it means that the photog will take your pics for free because you both get experience and photos out of the shoot and many photographers are willing to help new models out. This is how I started...I'm only 5'7'' which limits what I can do....but if you are exceptionally beautiful and driven your height doesn't matter and I'm sure you would be able to do commercial print work...just not runway. Runway is 5'9''-6'0''...sometimes even 5'10'' depending on the agency. Anyway...I wish you the best of luck!!! Get some pics and get them out there!!!

I am personally a model and im 14 and 5'7" I just got started and it really is alot of fun and of course you can be a model I wouldn't try to get into runway but commercials and print work would suit you well. Oh by the way do NOT go to any classes that teach you how to model they just want your money and if they ask you for any money up front they are scamming you. You shouldn't have to spend any money if they are ligit. You have to be very careful there are so many fake agencies out there.

Eve on America's Top Model was 5'8. She just looked short to all the 5'10 and 5"11 girls.....

You should talk to an agent to see if you are too short. Personally if they call Kate Moss short for a model and she's 5'8 I would think 5'0 would be too short.. but ya never know...

It's very hard to model when you are so short..but, if you are passionate about it, I would take classes and learn more about it. Then, when you are more experienced, maybe try more agencies. If you are super pretty, talented, and know how to take a good picture, they will look past your hieght.

p.s. Keep eating your veggies to grow taller!! lol

Good Luck!

There is an agency that you can go through. They have a support number where they can help you get set up with a portfolio. Check out the website: SearchforTalent.com. Seriously, you'll love it.

theres a model named eve and she made it on americas next top model even though she was short she had a sexy look in her eyes that won the judges over she looked perfect dispite her height dont let your height stop your dream from coming true focus on your other features instead of your height besides dont models wear high heels?

you can always do print work.. for retail stores.. its harder for shorter people.. but theres always calls. and most agents will tell you straight out if your not what their looking for.. but if you get a good one .. you should be able to book some jobs... ever consider parts modeling.. like hands or feet?

You actually have an advantage because most models have to wear heels constantly so you can wear all sizes without feeling awkward. =]
