The 2006 election? Depends on the state. The 2008 election? The democrats if they can come up with a reasonable candidate that is moderate and not polarizing.

If you mean the 2006 elections I don't see the Democrats taking either house back but I do expect some gains for them. If you mean the 2008 national election then it all depends on what transpires between now and then and who the candidates are. I think that John McCain with a well run campaign is very close to unbeatable, at least matched against any of the likely Democratic candidates. It might be that the Republicans will swing further to the right and not take McCain or Giuliani but instead opt for some hard core neoconservative. In that case a strong moderate candidate from the Democrats could win but right now I give the edge to the Republicans if only because the Democrats don't seem to have any platform or position beyond that they hate Bush. News flash dems, he won't be running again.

Unfortunately I believe the Republicans will. No Democrats have any vision that captures the American vote. Everyone says they are liberal but these are the same people that would rather sit at home and eat a donut than actually go out and vote. On the other hand a Republican will have major dental surgery and will still vote the same day. And that's the truth even though I'm about as liberal as they come.
