Can I iron on the stuff onto a shirt made of sweatshirt material? Will it peel off? or do I use a t-shirt made of cotton?

Sweatshirt material is not recommendable. you need to get a good fabric...It works on t-shirt..

What You Need to Do Iron-on Transfers
There are kits available that give you everything you need, including software and a t-shirt, or you can assemble your own materials. Whichever route you go, here's what you'll need for the typical iron-on style of transfer:

Software
Artwork
Transfer paper
Printer
Iron (or heat transfer press)
Hard surface (if using an iron)
Pillowcase or other fabric (if using an iron)
T-shirt or other item to receive transfer.

you will possibly desire to get good iron on pass paper, otherwise it sounds as though cheesy. the different element is it particularly is critical to trim the paper fairly on the threshold of the photograph earlier you iron it on. it's going to be slightly bright everywhere there is pass and you do not choose a ton of that throughout your shirt.
