Most women share this concern for their first exam. It helped me at 18 to think of the doctor as a doctor. They have seen everything before. If You have POS, chances are the exam will be just as easy for you since there isn't much they can do from a gynological exam. POS can only be seen through ultrasound (at least that is how it was for me). And of course they go by your symptoms too.Treatment is usually birth control pills that regulate your menstral cycle.
The doctor will explain what they are doing before hand and nothing really hurts. You may experience some pressure and a slight uncomforable pain when they take a sample from your cervix. It is not very painful at all, it is more dull than anything. What gets me every time is a cold instrument and the breast exam.
Not to worry. The doctor has seen it all, heard it all and if it is a woman doctor, she's been through it herself.
Other diseases that could be mimicking your POS are gastrointestinal diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Gastrointeritis or appendicitis.
You need to be examined to be sure POS is the cause.
If it helps, imagine the doctor naked....if you think that during the exam, you may laugh all the way through it.
If your a virgin, you have nothing to worry about..this type of proceedure will not break your hymen.
Good luck!

Hi
I hate the OBGYN...lol..but this is how I get thru it....
1. I make an appointment for first thing in the morning..the earlier the better..i feel the cleanest in the morning right after a shower...
2. I try to make the appointment with the mid wife..they just seem more relaxed then the doctor..If you can't get a midwife to do it (there are usually one or two in the OBGYN office staff). then I would choose a young female doctor.
3. When you go in....ask to talk to the doctor first..before she asks you to put a johnny on/ or a robe...tell her that you would rather talk first to get yourself comfortable...when you are talking with her..tell her you are nervous and never had this done before. Some doctors offices have pics on the ceiling to look at, some have movies that you can watch...(on the ceiling) or listen to a head set of relaxing music...some doctors talk to you about other stuff when they are doing the procedure..so your mind is not on the situation..remember that they see all different insides...if they are professional they won't comment or make you uneasy...they want the best for you....also ask if they warm the instruments....(if warmed it won't be so intrusive). tell them if you are a virgin...they will be more gentle...and respectful....
4. ask if you can leave your socks on..for some reason I am more comfortable with my socks on...
5. chew on a piece of gum..or suck on something...(ask first though)..takes my mind off of it with a piece of gum...
6. dont be afraid to ask questions..if they are using a viedo to see inside...or an ultra sound..ask to see if you can see the screen as well...I learned a lot from doing this..I got to see what my ovaries looked like..and cervix it was pretty cool....
I wish you luck...and if you need to talk..don't hesitate to email me ...ok...
the most important thing is to relax...
my first time..i farted..i felt so bad..but the doctor laughed and she told me a funny story during it..that some older woman in her late 70's was in for an exam and she thought it was only a fart..but it was a wet stool sample...and it landed on the doctors glasses....she said ...there are days you like...and there are days you will never forget...lol..and that was one of them...she said that the older woman didn't realize it...and then tried to blame the doctor for not cleaning her tools..lol....
RELAX and learn from the experience!

You should explain to the doctor that you are very nervous and ask that they explain what they are doing and tell you when and where they will be touching you. Try to relax and take deep breaths. (don't hold your breath) Try to focus on an area on the ceiling or wall and count or sing a song in your head. A nurse will be present during the exam. Ask her to talk to you and let you know what is going on. Remember, these are medical professionals and they are examining you to see what kind of treatment you need. Yes, it can be scary and embarrassing to have a pap test and vaginal examination, but it has to be done. I'm in my 30's and I still almost jump off of the table during my exam, but it helps when the doctor explains things before doing them.

Don't worry. I was nervous my first time too and was also a virgin. It doesn't hurt, just some pressure, and it's quick. The virgin thing just means they'll use smaller tools on you, so they don't tear your hymen. Remember you have nothing the doctor hasn't already seen a million times.
