Mesh the crankshaft with the camshaft so that the intake valve on any given cylinder opens at or slightly before top dead center of that cylinder.

Thank you Mr. Ruth for making me memorize that.

Don't know what engine you're dealing with. There will be a mark somewhere. Does it have the crank sensor on the front? There will be a sensor sprocket deal and it may have a mark on it that points directly to the sensor, indicating number one. Good luck.

this is a longshot, but my kl-ze mazda had timing marks on the belt cover(really odd). If you dont have your belt cover, go take a look at one at the junkyard or ask someone on a forum where their marks are. you can also try to find a buddy with alldata, and that will give you the correct angle to start with, once you do manage to find the marks.

good luck.

Timing gears have marks, be it dot or dash, on them so they either match up together or face 180 out from each other. Refer to your cars repair manual. It's not rocket science.....

Crank motor to bring #1 cylinder to near TDC on compression stroke. Insert distributor so rotor points to #1 wire location on cap. Check engine timing.

Some front wheel drive cars you time off the flywheel, look for a little cover on top of the bellhousing/transaxle.
