It means that they don't have to have a reason to let you go, they can at any time. It also means you can leave at any time without giving notice.

Boy, you asked a bugger of a question. Employment "at will" means they don't need and excuse to terminate you, and you don't need to provide one to quit. This is in opposition to the "just cause" doctrine, which means there has to be a really good reason. with "at will" they could decide they don't want you because you always wear blue and they don't like blue. With "just cause" they need to have a reason related to the performance of your duties to terminate you.

The only restriction involved in "at will" is if you are a member of a protected group according the EEOC. They cannot terminate you for any of those protected reasons (age, religion, gender, political affiliation, national origin, etc.) But if you're a smoker and are driving up costs with excessive absence or use of medical insurance with that as a direct cause, you're out of there.

At will became popular as a means to protect farm owners. They hired crop pickers when crops needed picking, and fired soon thereafter. They kept them from having to keep pickers as employees where there was nothing for them to do. It was eagerly adopted by nearly every state.

Simply say that employees signed an at will doctrine (job application) when they entered the workforce there. Express that there is no contract between the employer and employee and either one can seperate employment at any time for any cause.

"At Will Employment" is protection for the employer. They can let you go at any time, for any reason, without having to worry about a lawsuit. It means I can fire my lazy service guys without having to worry about some bogus lawsuit about "wrongful termination".

At Will means they may be terminated at any time, or they may leave the company at any time for any reason.

At Will means your are employed at the pleasure of your employer, and an employer can discharge you without just cause or without notice. Not a pleasant condition of employment.

it means the employee can leave at any time for any reason, or the company can let them go at any time for any reason... basically says they are employed without a contract.

There is no employment contract. That means you can quit whenever you want (without penalties that some contracts have), and they can fire you whenever, for whatever reason (barring discrimination).

This is a polite way to fire someone, sometimes people are given the option to quit on their on or be fired. Its obviously is better to quit.
