annoying isn't it. Hannah-Barbera started that, they assumed, correctly for awhile, that they were putting together programs for nitwits. They figured, if people thought other people were laughing that they would be obligated to laugh, too, even if the joke was lame. how dreary.

It's a remnant from the time when sitcoms were actually recorded live before an audience, much like talk shows are today. Some sitcom cartoons borrowed the formula to give it a feel of the show being aired at a live audience. With time it became evident that it was a gimmick and turned people off...

The simple answer is... the viewers were mainly children (and stoners -- in Scooby-Doo's case, mostly) and true to modern belief...
Children Are Quite Retarded
And they do not know when it is appropriate to laugh. Have you ever said grace at Thanksgiving, and not had some five-year-old giggling the entire way through for some reason?
He is Retarded.
Ever see a little boy peeing in the middle of a park for no apparent reason, with a bathroom just a few yards away?
He is Retarded.
Or girls, for example. Did you play with those freaky Barbies?
You were Retarded.
=) That's a true enough answer, right there.

Aw c'mon!!! I think it's cute!! maybe you're too young. I remember Scooby and Josey and the Pussycats -- and every sitcom under the sun. the laugh tracks are almost as funny as the jokes!

That is sooo STUPID on Scooby Doo. Exactly what I was about to say before I saw what you'd said about Scooby- Doo. Besides, it's not all that funny, anyways, is it?

Good question. I don't think there is an answer except they did not realize that it was annoying. They probably did it for the same reason they do it on sitcomes.

Tradition. Originally cartoons were on television to entertain all ages during prime time. When they moved to other time slots thaty kept some of the laughtracks to maintain continuity. it had become a tradition.

Because the networks honestly believed people wouldn't know when to laugh. The media is forever under the impression that people are stupid.

When You where 5 it all was good, now that your 30 it sucks. Switch away from chromatic vision and step outside for a while.
