You know how where the RAM busses are? There's usually 4 of them, right? I have 256MB with a 512MB next to it, and 256MB with an empty bus. I was going to add 1GB, but the guy who sold it to me said he wouldn't reccommend it. He said it would not do anything. He said to buy another 512MB. I was wondering if he was telling me the truth or not. Can someone help me with this?
Thanks

I just added (2) 1GB cards and (2) 512MB cards. Should that equal 3 GB, because it only says 2 GB.

It depends on what the computer will handle. Lots of times you need to put the same size chips in pairs. Check your book to see what your computer will handle, and if you need to pair them or not.

On my computer I have 1.75GB of Ram I have one simm at 256MB " that is what the computer came with" one at 512MB and one at 1 GB. I have not had any problem with this difference. The sales person probably wanted you to buy the 512MB and the 1 GB. He was just trying to make a sale. I have found, it is a rare occasion that a computer sales person knows what they are talking about.

More memory will always help. Since you already have a gig, adding another gig will not help very much, but it will still help.

Him telling you 1 gig won't help but 512 will, makes no sense at all. If your motherboard will take 1 gig chips, then buy the gig.

As long as you get the correct size and type, it will always help. The size of the chip has nothing to do with wether it helps or not.

When in doubt, "The bigger the better" frequently works in the world of computers.

you should have asked him why he said that.

a 32-bit computer(eg. the most common computer) can use up to 4gb of memory. However, your motherboard might not support 4gb though and might only suppot 2gb so maybe that is why ur sales guy told u that.

are you referring to RAMBUS RAM? He is telling the truth as RAMBUS RAMs should work in pairs. since you have 2x256 and 1x512, if you wish to upgrade, you need to get another 512 so that your 512 works in a pair. it is weird, but RAMBUS ram works this way that's y they didnt become popular
