Here's a tid-bit of information from a magazine of mine. I hope you find it helpful.

"What are the signs that my baby is teething?
Teething is often accompanied by red cheeks, restless nights and miserable days with a desire to chew on almost anything. Developmentally, all babies begin to produce more saliva around 12 weeks and explore things by chewing, regardless or whether they're teething. Symptoms of teething and illness can be very similar so understanding what your baby needs can be confusig. In general, babies cut their first tooth at around six to seven months, although this does vary. The first teeth to appear are usually the middle incisors at the bottom, following by the middle incisors at the top. Remember, it's important not to dismiss symptoms such as fevel, nappy rash or diarrhoea as teething. "

I'm also going to include the link to a parenting forum that I think you might like to join and find very helpful. It's full of supportive women with boundless knowledge about these issues. I learnt so much there that I doubt I would have learnt otherwise.

Wash your hands really good and feel into the gums you will feel a slight bump check the bottom center that is where most babies have there first teeth. My baby started in at about 2 1/2-3 months. I thought I was losing it teething that young was uncommon. Anyways if baby is fussy and nothing makes them happy. Sometimes drooling a lot. The need to have something in the month all the time (fingers, clothes, blanket, etc.) Really tired, decrease in feedings. You should call your ped. because the signs of teething can also be the signs of an illness just to be on the safe side. You can also ask the nurse about a correct dosage of tyeneol for baby to help calm him/her down if teething is what is going on. It never helps to have a couple of "experiniced" moms come over and feel to let you know for sure. First check with your ped. Good luck!

Congrats on your baby!!! This can be a tough time though huh :) So much to think about! The signs of teething are excessive drooling, putting hands or other objects in mouth and doing a chewing motion, hardened gums, white bumps under gums, puffy gums, low grade fever, runny nose and fussiness I think 6 weeks is kinda young but all babies are different! Id look out for those signs. It wont hurt her either to get her a teething ring, freeze it and let her chew on it, it wont do any harm, im not sure if you can use orajel now she may be too young, id talk to her doctor too. good luck hun :)

Teething can happen at any age. Some signs of teething are, drooling, light fever, fussiness, refusal of the bottle at times, constant wanting to chew. Try a wet wash cloth in the freezer or hold a teething ring for her. You can always try baby orajel too with some tylenol.

First off CONGRATULATIONS !!!! next the baby will drool like a hungry lab looking at you while eating a huge cheeseburger.the baby will try sticking everything in it's mouth. If the baby can't find anything she will try the blanket or fingers.some babies are actually born with the start of a tooth.anyway you can get these gel cold rings for teething, they work great. K-mart has a book it's the second in a series the first one is called "what to expect when expecting" I know too late for that one.Anyway the second might help I think it's called "what to expect ,the toddler years"it was something like that.I know it was a "what to expect" book anyway. My wife and I purchased the first one and it helped me a ton. Good luck

chewing on fingers and anything else
fussy and clingy to momma
fever crying

yes there are babies who teeth really early it is not often but it happens

check to see if the gums are white can you see where a tooth is trying to push through

these symptoms could also be colic

I would call your doctor and if you can not get them tonight then look in your phone book under your local hospitals they will have a 24 hour nurse line they will be able to give you the best advice and answer your questions better then anyone here

Good Luck being a mom for the first time can be tough

Yeah it is possible. They drool alot and tend to "knaw" on things but at 6 weeks they can't understand how to hold on to something and bite down for comfort so they may do it with the nipple of a bottle, pacifier or possibly while nursing. One thing about theething ... it can go on for months b4 a tooth actually breaks thru. But get this, My friend had a baby 2 months ago and she came out with 3 teeth two on bottom and one on top. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't went to the hospital to visit and seen it myself.

My daughter started drooling at 6 weeks, but didn't get her first teeth until 6 months old. Babies drool for months before they get their teeth. You'll see little white blisters on her gums right before the teeth come in.

Iam not sure if a baby could start teething at 6wks it might be possible but if you think your baby might be teething it could be something else you might want to see a doctor.
