Whatever it is it was pretty easy to take off. The emissions system on my truck is uber-complex, and not much about it in my Haynes manual.

In older cars, The air pump adds an unnecessary load and weight to the engine, it was a lame attempt to reduce emissions in the 1970's. it ran continuously and was belt driven.
It put outside air into the exhaust system in an attempt to burn off the Un-burned fuel and reduce C.O ( carbon monoxide)

Todays air pumps only run for a few minutes during cold starts to inject air into the exhaust, this heats up the catalytic converter quickly. ( the Catalytic converter does not work when cold. )

It creates more harm to the atmosphere that running straight exhaust. Remove it and put in a new 3 way cat converter. Good luck.

it recirculates the unburned gas vapors from your exhuast and is supposed to help your gas mileage. Be careful about taking it out, some states require it for emissions control. check with your local DMV office to find out if you need it.
