Depends on what decade you are referencing
During the movie hey-days (the 30's and 40's) a lot of Fred Astaire movies had him and his female co-stars "tripping the light fantastic" meaning dancing.
Back in the 60's, many who were taking LSD referred to the experience as a trip your mind takes (as the body pretty much stayed where it was, before the drug was made stronger and mixed with opiates). So when some one was on LSD it was called trippin'. He's trippin', meaning he was on acid.
Could you be referring to Tripping, a song, from Robbie Williams' album Intensive Care?
Then in 2005 MTV had an environmental documentary television series with Cameron Diaz.
Now a days I think the general meaning of it runs along the lines of "freaking out", or being super anxious and upset over something minor. Or it could be used as a greeting, instead of saying, "How's things going for ya?" or "Wuzzup?" you say "What's tripping?"
Any of these do for ya?

If you are refering to the slang word...it means when someone is either bugging you or is overly worrying about something.
i.e. Mom - Get off your *** and get a job
Me - Why are you tripping so hard?
