Because cold air is heavier than warm air, and if the freezer is in the top, then you don't have to run a fan to distribute the cold air to the bottom of the fridge (the coils that do the primary cooling are in the freezer part)
Modern fridges have lots of 'improvements', and one is that they decided not to care about efficiency of the motors as much, so air is circulated by fans to improve the 'salad crisper' drawer, etc. Also, you can now buy refrigerators with the freezer in the bottom.

Do you know that the fridge is cooled by the effect of the freezer? In the whole fridge the only place directly cooled is the freezer and it is efficient and economical to put the freezer at the top so that the cold air moves down through the fridge and the air in the fridge go up to near the freezer by the principle that cold air is heavier than warm air. However, there are with freezer at the bottom as well which is costly to operate.

Possibly a hold over from the original "Ice box" days, when a large block of ice was placed in a section at the top. Cold air falls, so it would help keep everything below it cool.

When electric refrigerators were designed, they just copied the ice box.

Nowadays the design is being reversed for various reasons, with the freezer on the bottom.

So that if someone opens the freezer while you are getting something out of the fridge, you stand up and knock your head off the freezer door really hard.

My daughter did this to me and I was knocked out cold for several seconds. I woke up with a pounding headache, laying on the kitchen floor.

well that's not always true, alot of the newer fridges are coming out with the freezer part on the bottom or the side. I dont know why all the older ones are like that, I'm asuming they either just didnt care to try putting it somewhere else or didnt have the know how to put it in other places.

I guess "they" think you use the freezer less than the fridge. Have you seen the new fridges with the big freezer drawer on the bottom.

Because it is generally smaller, and easier to get ice-cubes out of. =)

Also -- my friend Allison had a freezer-at-the-bottom style fridge for a couple of years in her garage.

It's not always above the main body! Your question is FAULTY! ^_^ Just kidding, love.

some refrigerators have a pull out freezer below. Or to the side. They usually make the refrigerated compartment the easiest to reach because most people use it the most.

Seems stupid eh? Since heat rises? But in acutality, the cooling system of the refrigerator is housed inside the freezer, and since cold falls, or descends, it starts to make more sense, eh?

My freezer's on the bottom. It's just a matter of preference and convenience. I prefer bottom freezers, some prefer top freezers.
