Government has no place in the bedroom of consenting adults. People who feel the need to impose their own arbitrary system of morality on the majority of others can go start their own theocracy somewhere else. I, for one, am tired of the extremist religious fascists on all sides.

We'll marriage is a very serious issue in this country. Because of our lowering marriage rates many children are being born without 2 parents and they often dont excel like other children so they cost the education system more. And its not a big deal to most americans because its so generally thought of as not the road they want america to take. The question is why do gay/lesbians want to push such questions to the attention of the mainstream people when they are going to get slapped down AND are taking up precious time they should be spending on more important things.

This is actually one of the big reasons why Bush won the 2004 election. The Republicans and right-wingers had managed to make everyone momentarily forget about the crap economy and the illegitimate war and instead turned it into a "moral" campaign and decided that gays marrying was a much bigger issue than our deepening economic crisis and dead soldiers. Unfortunately, the majority of this country are uneducated hicks who were, alas, too naive to see past this and thus the government tricked them into believing that gay marriage would somehow affect them. It's a mere diversion and it shocks me that anyone would be that dumb to fall for it. Do politicians really care about gay marriage? NO! They could care less, but if it can be used as a way to get them re-elected or to help them gain support in their political career then they will follow the bigot train.
I have gay friends that are very dear to me that I wish to see married one day. Gay rights are the new civil rights. Does the US forget so easily that just 50 years ago, blacks and whites could not marry just because of skin color? We thought it was an ABOMINATION. And now gays are the new blacks. I wonder who it will be next? Do people forget their history so soon when gays burned along with Jews in the ovens? Even today in the Middle East, the punishment for being gay is torture and death. They hang people publicly in Iran just for being gay. I hope that it does not come to that but if they have already taken away their rights as citizens, how far will they go?

You are correct. Whether in name or not, homosexual and lesbian unions have been around for a long time. There are only a few reasons I can see for the push to "legalize" them. The one I think I have heard the most is that both "partners" could be covered by the medical insurance that either one of them has. I do not know how good an idea it is, but it does make sense of a sort. The one that I personally believe is the real concern is a matter of "legitimacy." It the US government passes laws equating homosexual unions with heterosexual unions, that would suggest that there is nothing wrong with them. It would amount to a governmental approval of the lifestyle, an announcement that this is right to do and not wrong.
While I believe that same sex "partners" can do whatever they want, I do not believe that it should be governmentally sanctioned as "OK." I do not believe it is the right, but I do not believe in hauling homosexuals to jail either. They are free to live as they see fit, but not free to push the government to pronounce them "normal."
And yes, we need to be more concerned about our schools, the war- ending our involvement, and the condition of the poor and elderly. These are the real problems, not same sex unions.

The Bible says that anyone who cuts their hair around their temples should be put to death.
I think people need to realise that not all parts of an over 2000 year old book is completely relevant in modern society.
I think congress should be getting on ending the war in iraq.
I think it's great that gays and lesbians can get married in the UK, i see no reason at all why it should be illegal.

I think that this is an example of a larger problem in the American government these days, and that is that we're trying to legislate morality more and more. These aren't things that the government should be dealing with, because it isn't the governments job to tell us what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Morals are different between all people. The job of the government is to protect our life, liberty, and property, and hence laws and ordnances shoulod be made to protect them. However, our government gets into this gray area of legislating right and wrong and it's unfair because right and wrong are different for different people.

I say the government should stay out of grown folks' business over same-sex marriages and focus on reeling in the national debt, balancing the federal budget, getting the troops out of that messy Iraqi quagmire, strengthen public schools, fix the aging infrastructure, protect the homeland from terrorists, strengthen security at seaports and borders, etc.

Congress should not be in this at all. It's a non issue, which the media and bible thumping mouth breathers all made into an issue.
Gays marrying changes nothing, hurts no one.

There is nothing more important than getting re-elected. It's tough to vote on important issues - people might have differing opinions, and solutions are complicated. Far easier to vote on hot-button "moral" issues that will get people's passions in an uproar (about other people's passions.)

I don't pay any attention to that crap, the gay/lesbian bunch are the ones who should be more concerned about the rest of the world instead of always parading around their sexuality. Who gives a sh!t. We have many more pressing things to be concerned with.
