I want to get one, but I'm totally not into pain. Can you compare the pain to something else? I mean, just saying yes or no doesn't give me an idea of what it feels like, because people have different tolerances for pain.

Discomfort I can handle. I have no problem getting blood drawn, or getting shots. They don't bug me at all, since that was brought up. Thank you, everyone, for all the helpful insight!

Although I don't have a tattoo, my sister tried getting one. She had them stop after the first tiny rose... she couldn't stand the pain. This is a woman who had three children, and she said having the tattoo was a far worse pain than giving birth! You're right about people having different tolerances for pain... why not consider a fake tattoo for awhile to see if you really like having the same thing in the same spot on your body forever?

I have 3 tattoos. 2 on the hip, and an anklet.
I relate the pain to.... when outlining, it feels like a razor blade (you know it should hurt like hell, but it's so sharp it doesn't really hurt that bad). Shading, or coloring.... that feels like a person taking an eraser, and just rubbing it back and forth in the same area. Irritating, but not impossible to stand.
BUT.... you said yout are "totally" not into pain. And tattoos come with some discomfort!

Yes. It feels like getting a shot over and over and over. And, the larger the tattoo, the more pain you will have to endure. Take some asprin before you go. It hurts even more when it is close to bone and the absolute worse place to get one is on the top of the back thigh - as I saw on an episode of Miami Ink.

I have 4! Didn't hurt me but I have a high tolerence to pain. One of the tattoo artists I went to said to put ice on the place you want to get it, if it is super sensitive to ice then the more it will hurt, not so sensitive the less. Don't know if it works or not... All of mine are around the bottom of my legs above the ankle and on the back of the leg.

As long as you stay relaxed and let the artist do his/her thing, there is very little pain. Your best bet if you are concerned about pain is to avoid having the tattoo placed across a bone. Ankles and elbows seem to be the worst.

It depends on where you get them. My husband described it as "getting stung by 1000 mosquitoes a second." It didn't bother me that badly.
