The Swingle Singers are an old group that has done this many times. Also, an all male group called the King singers. Almost any accapella group will do this at sometime, as it adds to the harmonies. There is a contemporary group called AC-Rock that does it, and, don't forget Rockapella (made famous by PBS television and Carmen SanDiego!)

There is a group called "Rock-a-pella". I think that they do background singing on some coffee commercial. I've heard them sing and be interviewed on the "Mark and Brian Show".
There is also Bobby McFerrin, who sang "Don't worry, be happy". This method was also done back around 1969-70 on the "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" when the t.v. studio musicians went on strike and they had no orchestra to back up the brothers or their guests.
