Ocean star's answer, ifollowed it to the letter, but lost out trying to find the compressed file, where the hell did it go? I've looked everywhere. i did manage to compress 90 pics and tried to send them all but my saterlite system said, "Cannot reach provider." remove any files and the email goes, attach on picture and 90 percent of the time it does not go, or it takes 10 mins to send. I supose that this question is now lost in the slough of despondency. But if you see it please help a new born child to walk.

Click the link here - http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe - to download a Microsoft image resizer for windows xp. Once you've installed it (don't worry, it'll take you through the installation process) right-click on the photo you want to compress. A new item will appear on the menu that pops up, saying "Resize Pictures". Click this and then you will be able to down-size the photos, try the 1024x768 pixels size for starters and see how you get on. (This size is usually big enough to fill a screen, if your photos are from a digital camera they could be many times bigger - billboard sized sometimes)

Note that this will create a COPY of the file in the same folder as the original, but will not change the original itself.

I hope I've explained that alright. If not, give me a shout.

PS: people are suggesting WinZip here, but personally I think it's useless and will only compress your images by a negligible amount.

Go to download.com and get the free program winzip. Run the program and it will make a file with a zip extension that will have the picture in a compressed format. That will make the file size smaller.

Attach the zip file to your email and sent it. However the person receiving it will have to have a copy of the winzip program to convert the zip file back into the original picture.

A second thing you can do is to use the Paint program to make the pictures smaller (like reducing them from an 8x10 size to a 3x5 size). To use Paint:
Click the Start button
Click on All Programs
Click on Accessories
Click on Paint
When the program begins, use File and Open to open your picture
Once the picture is open, click on Image in the menu
Click on Attributes
It will show you the size of the picture. You can have it listed in inches, centimeters, or pixel (the dots across your computer screen).
Change it to show inches, and then adjust the size to what you want (like 3x5 or something).
Then do a File and SAVE AS, giving the new, smaller, picture a new name (you don't want it to replace the full size picture) and make sure you use the file type "JPG" or "JPEG" (pick it from the drop down menu under where you enter the file name). A "jpg" file is smaller than most other picture types.
Email that new, smaller picture to your friends and family

Just right click on the photo you want to send then you'll see an option "send to" go to tthat and you'll see "compressed (zip) folder". Click on it then click "yes" and it will compress (zip) the file. Go to the compressed file and right click and go to "send to" then "mail recipient" type in their address and and send it

Hopefully you have Windows XP :)

The compressed file should be in the same folder that the original one is in and it's name should be the same except the icon (little picture) next to it will be different

If you use Photoshop, (i have version 7) you can "Save for Web" which compresses, for example, a 2MB pic into 60kb. I always use that when emailing pics. I'm not sure if this feature is on Photoshop Elements though. Hope that helps.

just copy your photos to one folder. put that folder on your desktop so that it's easier to find it. and then you right-click it and go to send to and click compressed (zipped) folder. that way, it is compressed and the size is smaller. or maybe you could resize the photos first before you compress them. and then if you use yahoo mail, just attach it to your email. the folder should be on your desktop so it's easy to find.

Try photo editing software to make them smaller. The bigger the pic, the longer it takes to send.
