This is common, i encountered a few times before. It was because your network in lagging, that's why.
When i used dial-up last time, i always have this problem. After upgrading to broadband, no such problem

did you open up the msn messenger? if you did be sure you are not in the invisible mode. are set to be away or busy check that out and see what happens good luck

You may have blocked them or you are appearing offline. Failing that, delete them and re enter them into your MSN.
