The quantity is just short of 5 qts, actually 4.8. However the kind and weight of the oil depends the following:
The condition of the engine, including whether it leaks oil or uses oil between changes, and
the climate in which it is operated, and,
how you use the car presently.
Let's assume that you have some 80 K miles of normal driving, are driving in a moderate summer climate and you don't know if the car uses any oil. For this reason, I suggest you do not use Synthetic oil such as Amsoil as someone suggested. Why? Because if it either uses oil or leaks it, you will be leaking a precious fluid at somewhere around $8 per quart. I suggest a good name brand multigrade 10/40 oil. Use a WIX filter as it is better than others such as Fram. Good filters keep oil clean. By the way, never judge how dirty the oil is by the look of it.
After you change the oil, keep a close eye on the oil level and see if you lose any. Try to spot the leaks from where you park. Try and change the oil and filter regularly, about every 5k miles, unless you are doing very severe driving.
If, when you come ready for the next oil change you find that you have used practically no oil or that you have fixed whatever leaks exist, you might consider a change to synthetic motor oil such as Amsoil, Royal Purple or Red Line. Other synthetic oils, almost as good but more widely available, that have done well in tests are Castrol Syntec, Valvoline Syn Power and Quaker State Synthetic, in order of test results.
Amsoil filters are also superior, albeit expensive. With this oil, you can easily extend your oil life to 12-15 k miles or one year. I have been doing this with my cars for almost 20 years now, usually throwing on a filter at 6 months and topping off. I laboratory tested my oil before I believed this so I am glad to pass this on.
Remember, although you will gain gas mileage and power, between 3 and 8 percent, conservatively, with synthetic oil, you don't want to use it if you are burning it out the tailpipe or leaking it on the ground. The real benefit of synthetic oil is that you aren't dumping waste oil back into the environment as often. The money you save with reduced oil changes will pay for the increased cost of the oil.

If using a Motorcraft filter it will be an FL820S, and the proper weight of oil is 5W-30. Motorcraft oil is what is in it from the factory, it is made by Conoco-Phillips, but it really doesn't matter what brand, as long as you change it regularly, all oil must meet certain requirements. The crankcase capacity is 5 quarts when changing the filter also.

Spec s call for 5 qts. I would put 4.5 qts in, run engine for few minutes and add oil if necessary. My engine has 128,000 miles on it. Should I consider changing to 10w 30 or 10w 40 to allow for some bearing wear? What brand of"Energy Conserving" oil should I use? Would code CH-1 OR CI-4 oils be required.

actually it only takes 4.8 quart,s of oil to fill this vehicle,,and if you want to use the large filter,,which id better,,and last longer it will take 5.2 quarts,,but everyone usually just top,s off at 5,,i own a repair shop ,,and that,s all i put in them till i test drive them ,,and let it circulate a little,,if you use the small filter on it,,the oil don't last as long ,,because the filter get,s dirty really quick,,i hope this help,s you.,,also you can use any good quality of oil,in this car and it should be OK,,usually 5-w-30 in the summer,,and 10-w30 in the winter,,i usually use the same all year round.

bentley.....tmi
doesn't it say 5w30 on the oil fill cap?
if u still have the stock cap.
i have not seen too many oil leaks on 4.6, pretty good motor. maybe valve covers at most.
usually only freeze plugs rot out on those.
what's the difference between 4.8 and 5 quarts of oil?
why waste that last 3 or so ounces of oil. if 5 qts is put in i doubt it would be over the full mark.
what i meant to say is 5 qts and 5w30 manufacture recommended. they designed he engine.

It would take 5 quarts of 10 W 30. I use Valvoline. I hear Pennzoil is good too.

5 quarts if you are draining all the oil and changing filter.. 10/w/40 and always check the dipstick after you run it and check for leaks.
