Discrimination doesn't solve discrimination. Just like before, the people who benefit from it use whatever rationalizations they can lay their hands on to justify it, but it's still wrong.

No, the only thing those companies are doing is to eliminate the preferences that routinely have been given to white males. There sometimes seems to be the idea that a white male should get the job unless there is a very good reason to hire someone else. That's just silly. There are too many intangibles that go into a hiring decision, that's never going to go away, but the people who put some effort into seeing that white males do not always get a free pass should be commended.

The trend is moving away from affirmative action as it has now been in place long enough that people recognize that they must hire the most qualified - prices have gone up and generally, all companies are downsizing.
And, if someone can prove that they did not get a job they were qualified for, and someone who was not qualified received the job, they have a case to sue the employer.
Believe it or not, thanks to attorneys who have fought companies for this practice have made a difference in people hiring the qualified person as opposed to any other candidate, gender, race, age, and sex set aside.

Yes I think companies discriminate trying to obey the law. I agree totally with you that the most qualified person should get the position.
I also think companies discriminate against the handicapped, the disabled, older people, and veterans.

Yeah, but there is always more than one person well qualified for the job! That's one reason why discrimiation can occur, employers simply have to axe potential employees on the basis of irrelevant criteria...like tattoos, ethinicity etc. So the nature of attaining a job is inherently discriminatory - and the aspirant employees have to know that! Therefore, it really doesn't matter who gets the job (woman, gay, black or whatever 'minority') because it is going to discriminate somebody regardless of who gets the job..

Yeah. They ought to hire only qualified capable people who can do the job, never mind the race. But that's what started the problem in the first place.
