He was killed by native Hawaiians on 14th February 1779 on Hawaii Island. He was attempting to take native hawaiians hostage in order to get back stolen property. The natives fought back and Cook was stabbed in the back as he retreated.
Hardly an honourable death for such a great man.

bleh's got it right. i saw the spot on the "big island", somewhere near kealakekua as i recall, it's been about 7 years now. a picturesque spot with wonderful swimming, and by just snorkeling i saw within an area of maybe twenty yards, sea turtles, many dolphins very close, a ray(manta?), assorted fish, of course, sea snakes, amazing. luckily no sharks; they're definitely no joke. one night on the west side heading toward hawi, in a county park, at dusk, i was standing on rocks overlooking the ocean, and this huge --15ft., at least, "shadow" swam by just beneath the surface. a shark according to the local person also there. very impressive. btw i'm not sure cook was such a wonderful guy. legend has it that the bodies of the unfortunate decedents including cook's were fed to dogs, and then those dogs were thereafter immediately dispatched and their remains fed to yet another group of dogs, if you get the picture. probably not kudos.
