Hi,

Don't you mean "Without getting a Hit"?
Error would only work if he hit the ball but it was not counted as a HIT because of an error.

But I might be assuming what you mean. May it is a trick question and error would not be one of the six.

Ok here is my guess:

1 Walk
2 Catcher miss ball on third strike
3 Pinch runner
4 Fielders choice
5 Catcher interference
6 Hit by pitch

1. Base on balls (intentional walks are a subset of this).
2. Catcher drops strike three with first base open (or with two out) and fails to tag batter or get the ball to first base before the batter gets there. This is the only error involving the batter in which the batter has not hit the ball. This is also the only way a fielder's choice involving the batter can occur without the batter hitting the ball (the catcher attempts to put out one of the other runners and fails; this can only happen with two outs and runners are forced by the batter who is running on the dropped third strike).
3. Catcher interference resulting in the umpire awarding the batter first base.
4. Batter is hit by a pitch.
5. Player enters the game as a pinch runner for a man on first base, or in extremely rare cases for the batter (yes, this is in the rules).
6. Player enters the game as the first baseman.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for writing.

There are 6 ways for a batter to reach base without getting a hit:

1) walk
2) hit by pitch
3) catcher's interference
4) strike out, ball gets away from the catcher
5) fielder's choice (batter safe at first)
6) error

Best Wishes,

Geoff

1. Base on Balls
2. Hit By Pitch
3. Catcher's interference
4. Dropped 3rd Strike
5 & 6 are tough ones:
According to Official Rule 7.05 (h), the batter and base runners get one base "if a ball, pitched to the batter or thrown by the pitcher from his position on the pitcher's plate to a base to catch a runner, goes into a stand, or player's bench, or over or through a field fence or backstop, or is touched by a spectator."

Alternately, according to 7.05 (i), "on ball four or strike three, when the pitch misses the catcher and lodges in the umpire's mask or paraphernalia," the batter and runners are entitled to advance one base. That is, if they can stop laughing long enough.
