The landlord doesn't know, and I have no info on the house or any idea where to start looking for info on it. Ideas?

Go to the local building department in the municipal office of the town where you live - the original building permits will have the builder's name.

go to city hall and have them find out, they should have a copy of the permit

most likely you can't find out, contractors sub contract to many builders!
