Once again I'm back with questions for a N.India trip. I'd like to plan this on my own w/o using an Agent (last option). My proposed itinerary:
Delhi-Agra-Jaipur-Manali -Shimla in December.
1) Can i travel from jaipur to Manali directly (distance?). or do I
have to do a Jaipur- back to Delhi- then manali route?
2) I do not want to spend a fortune on hotels (5 persons travelling)
so any suggestions for good / reasonable accommod.
Someone in Yahoo Answers, suggested Jimmy Johnson's
Lodge in shimla. Any other recommendations for Hotels in
Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Manali, Shimla.
3) Delhi-Manali is a 12hrs drive - any places of interest enroute?
Kids with me, dont want them to get stressed out.
4) Advisable to hire transportation for this round trip or use public
transport?
Thanks for all the information that I may get.

You have not mentioned how money-wise you are placed for the entire trip. Like with kids and not stressed out much, I suggest that you hire a suitable capacity (for 5 persons you said) cab/taxi (with driver) from Delhi for your triangular journey for Delhi-Agra-Jaipur. This way you can enjoy flexibility and comfort in many ways -time, places, re-scheduling, halting etc.

For Shimla and Manali, you can either travel by deluxe/semi-delux/Volvo buses of state government road transport or private operators. While in Delhi, visit Chanderlok building on Janpath, Connaught Place - opposite Hotel Imperial. There you may find a good number of private operators, claiming to be specialist in Himachal Tourism for each and every tourist facility - including transportation, accommodation, sight seeing, packages etc etc. Explore them with all your questions related to Shimla and Manali. Note down details, have printed brochures from them and everything else. Come out and analyse what suits you most. With these tips you can either get back to them for your trip to Shimla/Manali or arrange for yourself. Himachal is a friendly state and I don't foresee any major difficulties with family.

At all the places, you can find plenty of accommodation, hotels to stay with all kind of budgets. Take care of hygiene anywhere you stay.

Why dont you rent a car with a driver? You will not have to do the back trip.

Because Jaipur and Manali are both in opposite directions from delhi. So naturally you have to go back to Delhi. But having a car will help so you do not have to stop if you dont want to.

Delhi has a lot of cheap hotels. But what do you mean by cheap hotels? If you go to Karol Bagh, there are hundreds of hotels.

I could recommend but they are basically same so you pick and choose. Go to paharganj near the railway station and it is evenbetter. Most hotels have boards with rates written and planted outside so you do not even have to venture in.

But if you just arrive at Delhi, the taxi drivers will take you to hotels in your price range. They get commission for bringing guests into hotels.

Jaipur is beautiful but overcrowded so plan your trip properly.

The bus service is good too and price wise the train and bus are the same cost. If you are flying, well then you dont have to worry about anything. Just fly.

If you go in the tourist season, you must remember hotel rates will not be the same as in off season rates.

One very good idea is get the Tourist Guide book on India.

It is a big fat book but it has hotels listed and places to see and eat. All price ranges are put down and maps shown. I found it very helpful.

Hope this helps.

Have a wonderful trip.

Delhi-Jaipur-Agra form a triangle. If you go to Jaipur from Delhi then the bus fare maybe around 200 rupees a person(i.e appox $4.5) one way. So I would suggest you hire a Car (Toyotal Qualis 8 seater), so you can leave delhi early morning by car and come back by night to delhi or go to agra. It won`t take much time to see jaipur. 2 forts and a couple of more things.

The taxi/cab would be charging you around 80-100$ for 24 hrs. SO this way you can travel between these places at your own leisure. The Highway between jaipur n delhi is very good, will take around hrs to reach jaipur.

Well about manali n all my other mates here might be able to tell you, i`m not so familiar about the hills, so won`t give u any wrong advise.
have a nice trip. :)
