My 3 week lil girl was having problems pooping and passing gas with the Similac with Iron so my doctor gave me Good Start supreme Soy. Shes passing gas fine and isnt as fussy but still hasnt pooped since yesterday around 5pm. But shes now getting up every 2 hours to eat instead of every 3-4 hours. Im wondering is that because its easier for her to digest with the dha and ara (found in breastmilk) in it? Shes eating 2 onces and sometimes a lil more each feeding. Shes only been on this new formula for 24 hours. How long should I wait to see if this is working better with her and what signs should I be looking for if its not. Thanks and sorry so many questions!

When my daughter was that age I went through the same thing. I had her on Similac and she was throwing up constantly so I switched her thinking she was allergic to it. We tried soy and I was convinced it was constipating her. The doctor informed me that when switching formula their tummies have to get used to it and sometimes they don't have a bowl movement every day. I gave it a couple more days and she did great. He said to give her 3 days so I would wait and if she still hasn't had a bowl movement I would call the doctor. Good luck!

I think she is already showing signs of the formula agreeing better with her. As you have said yourself, she isn't as fussy, so that is one indication that the formula isn't giving her uncomfortable gas pains.

Also, it sounds like the Good Start supreme Soy formula is agreeing with her more, as well, because she is hungry for it more often which would mean that she is digesting it easier. It may be a pain to feed her more often, but it really is better for her. A newborn's stomach is extremely small, and they do need to feed quite often, but it will get better with time. I hope you get some sleep soon!

My guess would be that if she starts to revert back to being fussy, that the change in formula only provided a temporary relief for her.

Don't worry, I doubt your daughter is constipated. Sometimes babies go for days at a time without pooping. As this new formula agrees with her more, I would wait it out and see.

I'm going to include the link to a parenting forum that I think you might find helpful. It's full of supportive women with boundless knowledge about these issues. I learnt so much there that I doubt I would have learnt otherwise.

first of all....don't panic!!!!
the thing about newborns is that the more you change their food, the longer it takes them to start pooping...my baby girl didn't really poop her first week...so, you just need to give your girl some time for her body to get used to the new formula...so i'd wait a couple days and see what happens...

the reason for her eating more often is that before her stomach had a sense of fullness b/c of the gas and it also made it hurt, so she was less likely to eat very often...clearly good start sounds like it is what is best for your girl (don't know much about formula...i breastfed) b/c it's not giving her gas...it's good that she wants to eat a lot and it's necessary for her to in order to grow...as long as you don't feed her below every 2 hrs, then for her first 3 months, it's good that she eats a lot....

give her some time to see if she's pooping and how fussy she gets while she's pooping before you call the doc...the fact that she isn't pooping isn't bad for her...if in the next couple of days she still hasn't pooped, it could mean that it's constipating her a little...just give her water (bottled or boiled) between feedings...just a little bit so as to not take away all her hunger and that will help to loosen her stool...if after that she still isn't pooping, then i would call the doc...

good luck!!!

keep her on the new artificial milk for at least a week - babies are a lot like puppies - when u change their food, their tummies take abt that long to adjust. artificial milk made of soy is more binding, and your princess will probably have less frequent bms - make sure u r burping her really well after each feed - soy can make excess gas. congrats on your new angel-baby, and never hesitate to call the pediatrician - tht is what she is there for! :) also - not every baby eats, sleeps, or poops like another - not even if they are siblings! a great book is Christain parenting and childcare by DR Sears - all his stuff is great!

well for one you should not just immediatly start on a new formula....you have to slowly switch...

see verybestbaby.com for the chart.

try hylands colic tablets/baby bliss gripe water..both help tummy..and help the bowel movements..and both are natural.

my daughter had the exact problem..we went thru all the similacs..to enfamil..to finally nestle..and what a difference!

the signs are not so gassy and definitly not so fussy! Babys tend to not have bowel movements everyday..also try the Anti-colic bottles (dr browns widenecks/playtex ventair natural shapes)

Try some of that new Yo Baby Yogurt..very little (a couple bites) it may work on getting a bowel movement.

Just TRANSISTION the formulas..dont immediatly switch..its easier on there tummy..

Hope that helps!

It'll take 7-14 days before you'll know the full effect of the new formula. My son switched at 9 days old...the soy really did help. Good luck!!

P.S. If the soy seems to be helping, but she wants to eat more and more ask her Dr. if you can thicken her bottle with a little bit of rice cereal...my sons Dr. told me to, and it helped him to get full faster and for longer.

Good Luck!!
