It has been matched, and exceeded long before Scarface came out in 1983. I was a teenager when I saw Scarface on the big screen three times, with three different friends. And I admit, I is as spectacular a movie now as it was back then. However, It doesn't even come close in comparison to the godfather, or Dillinger. These were "gangsters" in the true sense of the word. Tony Montana, was a drug lord. Another fantastic cinematic biopic of that genre, would be the 2000 release of "traffic". Fantastic real life all around account of the drug itself, and how it gets processed, and into the hands of the American people...
Though Scarface is a great movie, there is so many other great movies that tell a much more dramatic story without all the gore.

they're 2 different sorts of gangster action pictures. Scarface is a blockbuster, for lack of a more effective description. The Godfather is more effective of an allegory about the Italian Mafia. there is honestly a complicated tale to it. i imagine Scarface is more effective relaxing to visual demonstrate unit, however the Godfather is a more effective movie universal.

I have all these films and more... and I could take myself FAR to seriously like these guys and spout endless drivel about the finer points of a certain director's genius and flair etc.etc.etc...

HOWEVER... I dare to be the unpopular person in the room...

I think the best gangster flick is: Lock stock and two smoking barrels!!!... And i'll tell you why:

1. Great story
2. Well directed
3. Gritty in parts
4. Funny as hell, AND it does'nt take itself too seriously!

Think of it this way... all these 'Film Critiques' banginging on would say their 1st CD they bought was Nirvana etc... when it was actully Shaking Stevens or New kids on the block...

ENOUGH SAID... you enjoy what you want mate... don't listen to the pompus drivel of saddos ;-)

Scarface was a victimisation of a group of immigrants that was arriving at our shores at that time. It diminished the image of a group of people who had too many strikes against them to begin with.

I think that Scarface is a very bad movie. The stereotyping in it harmed many real people. No I don't think that it epitomises anything other than prejudice and ignorance!
