The rule, as always, is to stay away from those that ask you to pay before you can get these surveys.
Legitimate market survey companies such as Pinecone Research recruit members based on demographic characteristics -- e.g. mothers of babies 0-12 years old -- and will send surveys of products and services targeting this demographic group. Pinecone Research, however, pays only $5 per survey -- you're definitely not going to be rich with that. They can give you anywhere from 1-5 at most surveys in a month.
Other companies simply ask you to answer as many research as possible, and you don't earn anything just the chance to win at a raffle (which I find lame).
The article "Earning Money from Surveys" provide a short list of legitimate market research firms and contains explanations of what to look for when joining surveys (and weeding out the fraudulent ones)

First off, online surveys are merely companies doing an inexpensive version of market research. The scams are not these companies, they are the companies selling list of companies that offer online surveys.
You should never pay for a list of companies to sign up with to do surveys. You can google the phrase "online paid surveys" or something along those lines to find companies. I do these surveys about once or twice a week. I mostly make $2 - 4 per survey that takes me about 10 minutes. I get paid by check in the mail from a few companies like ACOP and I get paid in Paypal by Survey Direct and Survey Savvy.
There is a list of online survey companies here, and again, you can try search engines. Just never pay a dime for anything!

The trick to earn a lot of money with paid surveys is simple, you need to join as many survey companies as you can. Check out this site for a list of legit survey sites based on payout: http://www.clicksurveys.net
I am earning from $2500 to $3500 each month by completing surveys online. Good money for 1-2 hours of work each day.

I have. I've received $1-$5 for each survey and there is one site that gives you points that you can cash in. Many sites will promise an entry to sweepstakes, but of course you will never get anything from them. It is very time consuming just like Yahoo Answers. I wouldn't feel comfortable posting individual web sites, but if you go to www.volition.com, they have a list of survey sites.

If you're looking for some extra income you may find this interesting. What the hell, no one else is paying you to do stuff on the internet. I've made 500.00 bucks alone with this site just by doing surveys and free trials. This was all in just hours of my own free time...I hope you don't consider this to be 'spam' but I am seriously trying to help you out. Anyway, if you want to check it out for yourself and read up on it here's the site. And yes, it's totally free. After you register, check the 'Messages' tab to learn how to make the easiest money. No age requirement. Thanks for reading.
AND THEY PAY!!!
