The Merriam - Webster Online Dictionary defines cookie as a small or slightly raised cake so I guess by that definition a Newton is a cookie. True, it has a filling, but so can a cake have a filling but is a cake a cookie? Well, the Merriam - Webster Online Dictionary defines a cake as a breadlike food made from a dough or batter that is usually fried or baked in small flat shapes and is often unleavened, and, a sweet baked food made from a dough or thick batter usually containing flour and sugar and often shortening, eggs, and a raising agent (as baking powder. I guess a cake can be a cookie too!

So it seems that, "a cookie by any other name would be just as sweet - or a cake!"
