In short...we make state machines do something useful. :) We write/design software using one or several of a multitude of different programming languages. Typically the language is human readable, and though not always comprehensible by non-programmers, usually is composed of many very simplistic operations (add, subtract, concantanate...etc).
Anything specific you want to know?

We write computer programs, it's hard to break it down more than that unless you're specific.
I am one, and feel free to email me with any questions you have about it.
