The Celts worshiped them as real . the asians believe the world was made by a seven headed dragon.and still belive in them both good and evil ones.
so it may be a rememberance of animals that did live in this plane of existance at one time in the past until like most magical beings faded into myth through large scale disbelife in them.

If you want to believe hard enough then wizards(merlin) could have existed in the past. I think dragons did(& merlin) b/c we have komodo dragons as proof. Instead of getting bigger as humans have done; they would have shrunk to their present size. I wish they were real now; don't you?
