Um.. Maybe you're really trying to get the 'feel' of the song? They say that if you wanna get the 'real' feeling of something, you should get your eyes closed.. Who knows?

Actually, your eyes shouldn't close. I've found that relaxing, and selecting an object, any object in the room ... a mirror, picture, table, anything and sing to it and 'try' to forget others are listening.
Try standing in front of a mirror watching yourself to practice this. One thing I've personally experienced, I have to stand still ( holding my guitar ) and using said 'tip' to keep from singing sharp or flat. My personal experience(s) were that I was trying too hard and singing sharp. What works for me may not be what works as well for you. Experimentation, alone, will benefit you immensely.

To me it is like when you are talking to someone and you use your facial expressions and your hands to talk, that is what the person that sings the song is doing when they close there eyes,it is to let you know that they are really into the song!!!
