My CD/DVD drive isn't working. Whenever I play a music CD and DVD movie, it does not read. It says "insert CD in drive" And I do have a Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop.

All the CDs I used are clean. And it seems that the blue lens is clean. How do I find out if the computer is reading the drive?

The lens is dirty. Try buying a cleaning cd (found in electronic section of Wal-marts or music stores). You can insert into your pc and it'll clean your lens.

If the drive just doesn't work all of a sudden, it might be because the notebook has been dropped. Something inside is probably messed up. If you have the notebook under warranty still you can call in. Don't tell them you dropped it... :) You can have a techie look at it before you consider replacing the drive.

If you have 2 or more optical drives, you must tell your CD/DVD player program which drive to read from. D:\ or E:\ or F:\ drive whichever drive you put the disc into!

Check your hardware list in My Computer properties to confirm your system is seeing the CD player. Also, what software are you using to play the disk?
