Everyone always has to have the best , tv, laptop, ipod, cell phone, digital camera, computer, car... this world is too materialistic. What ever happened to marbles, playing war & spit, jax? It was a hell of alot cheaper... Why must you all have to have it?
PS-- I have a Razr, a dell, an apple ipod, old jeep & no digital camera.

The short answer is we are Americans, and our culture/society programs us from childhood to be materialistic, competitive, compulsive shoppers, and prolific users of credit cards
When I was younger, I had to have it all too. After a while, though, people grow up and realize that the most important things in life are good relationships with your family, and good friends who love you no matter what. People who don't realize this end up very lonely and empty inside. FYI, I do not own an IPod, a Razr, a Jeep, or a digital camera. These days, the only person I'm interested in impressing is myself.

I don't own a computer-use the ones at the library or the school district I work P/T for. No cell phone or pager. I have an MP3 and a digital camera only because I won them in a sports info contest. I drive a '97 Toyota Corolla with starter problems.
Yet, I too suffer from culture-induced "more-ism" -the "sell" of the idea that we NEED more (regardless).

people don't need it they think they do but really they don't
now a days people think they need top of the line things
they don't need to fit in it's just mayb to show how much money they have or just cause it's a beter device that they can have!
i-pods are nice by the way! :)
nothing wrong with having better things that will last longer then cheap things that you waste your money on buying new ones over and over again cause they keep ..falling apart
it's a new generation!
that's all

Some people won't like this answer....but most households have 2 working parents (or divorced parents). Parents today do not take their responsibilities seriously. They make up for lack of personal attention to their children by giving them expensive trinkets.
They expect their teachers to raise their children. Rather than teach their children about perverts, they expect the government to get them out of the neighborhood. They spoil them rotten allow them to disrespect everyone including themselves. If their kids use drugs, it's the bad influence of the other kids.
This does not apply to all parents, or all families.
