As a child I remember lighting bugs at night blinking their lights. Then I moved to a large city as an adult, I saw them never again. They are even gone where I grew up as a child, are they gone forever? I hope not.

we used to rub their bodies on the ground so we could see the glowing streak. They died when we did this but we didn't even consider that at the time.

We also used o capture them and put them in a jar with holes in the lid. we would shake them up to see them glow. That was a few decades ago.

God Bless You, ;-)

I haven't seen them on the west cost.

I went down to Little rock AK for the fourth we went through Saint Louis MO and stopped at a rest stop about 30 miles from the city there were lightning bugs everywhere. It was great the kids played there for a hour chasing and running through them along with me. It brought back some wonderful childhood memories.

Where do you live? Much of the nation has had an excessively hot July. Lightning bugs don't do as well when it is very hot and dry. Also if you or your neighborhood uses pesticides, that kills the "bad guys" as well as the "good guys" like lightning bugs, butterflies, bees, ladybugs, praying mantises, etc. I live in rural Virginia and lightning bugs are still hale and hearty here - at least they were until we had a dry spell with daytime temperatures in the 90s.

I don't know where u are from but I live in the U.S, and we have them. One thing we haven't had for many years since I was little is grasshoppers. This summer I have seen 2. So maybe, little by little if the environment improves, you will eventually see the return of the beautiful, dainty firelies

I bring my kids out to catch lightning bugs every year, they love it. Here in Mass they are out very late June into mid July, they seem to peek around the first week of July.We have plenty of them around here!
Well you need to plan a trip to a rural area next July 4th weekend, bring your glass jars and catch some!

They only come out in June and early July then you don't see them til next year. They haven't gone anywhere it was just your timing going back to where you grew up.

It's probably because there is so much development over the years,it never really gets dark enough to cause the flash of light to catch your eye.

If you want to see lightning bugs, you've got to get out of the city. They need vegetation, not concrete. They are everywhere in more rural areas.
