Post subject: ERG valve
Archived from groups: alt>autos>ford (more info?)

I understand the theory of the ERG valve. It's to recycle some unburned
hydrocarbons back in to the engine cylinders. In practice, it covers the
intake manifold with an oily goo, clogs the fuel injectors and spark
plugs, and builds up deposits on the valves, decreasing the car's MPGs.
My link from the exhaust to the ERG value broke and while I was waiting
for Ford to get replacement parts, my MPG increased by 4 MPGs.

If you live where there are no pollution emissions tests required for your vehicle, then it's okay. If there are tests, then your vehicle may (probably) fail the test, and you would need to fix the EGR system in order to pass (I'm in this situation).
EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It's a pollution control method that takes some of the exhaust from the engine and dumps it back into the engine again, ultimately reducing the levels of nitrogren oxides going out the tailpipe. When it doesn't work right, your vehicle will pollute more with nitrogen oxides. But it won't hurt your vehicle.

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve sends hot exhaust gases back to be reburned by the engine. As the gas is hot, it burns more efficiently. Without a properly working EGR valve, you fuel mileage will be reduced.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE OTHER ANSWERS!!! Although they mean well, a bad EGR valve if stuck open can burn a hole in a piston and ruin your engine!!! I have seen it!!! If it is stuck closed, it can go for a while no problem. Get it replaced!

E.G.R. (Exhaust Gas Recirculator)
All this does is allow a small amount of engine exhaust to recirculate back into the engine to reduce engine knock.
If it's stuck open, your car will idle badly.
If it's stuck closed, your engine may run poorly during moderate acceleration.
It will not cause serious problems, but you will FAIL smog tests.

if you ahve a ford late model you can unplug the egr sensor and run that car forever. I HAD A LINCOLN 84 AND RAN IT FOR 425000 MILES
