All companies who issue stock in the U.S. are considered public companies and required to have an audit as well as report company financial data in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).

Most larger public firms report openly and thoroughly, as you will find by reading their annual reports and other readily available material. Reading their annual solicitations for proxy votes will also show you that some activist shareholders, usually with only a few shares, plague the companies by trying to make them publish information of value only to the activists and at great expense to other shareholders with legitimate interests. If you think a public firm is hiding something, don't buy their stock.
