I think any drawing program would be fine. If you want to use the computer. Otherwise I suggest you buy some grid paper and make scale sketches.

Programs aren't going to complete the design for you. For that you will save money in the long run if you hire a professional. That's what they do.

You want to do more than just comply with the building codes, you want it to be fully functional and suit your needs. There's a lot more to building a house than how you want to arrange the living spaces.

I'd start buy looking at various floor plans you can buy books that have multiple floor plans in them to give you some ideas.

Bottom line if you get ready to build hire a professional to do the design, you won't be sorry.

I would recommend 3D Home Architect by Broderbund. I have used it for years. I am a facility director for school districts and i ofetn have to layout roms and additions and get input from teachers, principals, etc. It is great and allows me to do what I need to without the complications of Autocad. My kids (11 & 13) both learned it years ago and use t sometimes.

As to code compliancies, it does a code check but I have found it can be fooled easily.

I think the program is about $80 or so.

Good luck

use Turbo CAD its an easy program to learn, but you will have to find out your states building laws and codes because every state is different.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET PUNCH! HOME SUITE! It sucks. It is so hard to use. You make a perfectly square room and every wall is a different length. Stairs are impossible to make. There are NO fireplaces. It's retarded.
