I started mine with herbs. I grew them in containers and used different methods to lift them to differing levels. Some were on the ground, others on terra cotta feet, still others on stands or tables with others underneath. I got a connector that allowed me to hook a hose up to the sink and made for easy watering. I eventually blossomed out (couldn't resist the pun) to flowering plants and even a little pine tree one Christmas. It was good too, because when I moved to this house I had over 200 plants in my collection to put into the ground!

Just get a few 5 gallon buckets and buy some potting soil at a nursery or a department store like Walmart (they will also have some planting containers if you cannot locate any buckets) and you are on your way! You can also get some trays to go under the containers to help catch overflow. Make sure that whatever containers you use have holes in the bottom for drainage! Then just fill your containers and plant your plants! Tomatoes grow great this way as well as cucumbers, peppers, beans and the like as well as all kinds of flowers! Oh yeah, can't forget strawberries! You can move them around to catch more sun also if desired! I hope this helps!

containers, obviously. here's one i had pretty good luck with: get some white plastic pipe, bigger is better, diameter wise. you could use 4inch, i recommend 6inch or more. draw line down center. cut holes centered on this line, round ones, say 4inch. fill with potting soil, cap the ends. drill a smallish hole in one of the caps, this is your drain. personally i glued a plastic funnel on top at the other end, shove it deep, experiment. you can hang this thing, horizontally on a balcony rail. allow a small angle down to drain end. plant some plants in the holes. actually looks nice if you do it well.
repeat this process with a BIG pipe, tube, whatever, for a vertical planter. plant holes all around on this one. you'll need some sort of base, and the top can be planted in this one. don't forget a drain. you'll want to keep the soil from falling out of this one, use sphagnum moss, maybe a little bit of chicken wire to hold the moss in if your holes are big. these are incredible space savers with loads of planting options. depending on what you plant these are great during full bloom. they actually make big terra cotta pots for strawberries using the same principle as this one.
good luck and have fun in your garden.

When I lived in an apartment my husband made me a a planter container out of wood. It was like a trough. Mine was pretty big, but size while vary according to the amount of space you have. We were able to have a huge vegetable garden. They didn't do too well though, there wasn't enough sunlight. So make sure you will get the sun. Happy Planting!

Yes. It's called "Container Gardening". You can find books at your local library. There are many things that you can grow in containers and you would be really surprised. The containers are mobile and very easy to care for.
Good luck!
