It is most often used with compassion and a ton of empathy - it is almost a given that it would be used in this manner because these are the traits needed to accomplish the task, if you know what I mean.
Yes, I have been able to do this and yes, I can barely believe myself as I type these words. I can do reiki, and sometimes when I do this, I pick up things - not normal stuff, not easily predictable stuff either - specific.. it has happened to me abt 20 times and each time I feel real strange saying something, but it has always been correct. I don't know abt using it for anything other than an empathetic sharing caring moment w/a usually rather stunned individual..
You know, I think we all can do it to an extent - When you are talking to someone, you know if they are bored or enthused etc.. you can see it in their face - - and it is obvious.. I think that this too can be taken to another level if one is perceptive..
The best explanation I ever had for my reiki experiences is that if when I do it, I blank my mind and my mind is clear, that much in the same way that if you place two guitars opposite each other and pluck an E - then the E on the other guitar will also vibrate.. Well, apparently if I am on a sympathetic plane, the thoughts of the other person will vibrate inside me too.. But like I said, I do not fully understand it..

I would use my gift to better our society. I would use it to look into the minds of the people in vegatative states and comas. I could have solved the legal debacle in the Terry Schivo(sp) battle. I would also use my powers to assist the judicial system in finding if one was truly innocent or guilty in a crime so innocent people wouldn't go to jail, and crooked lawyers wouldn't help the guilty back to the streets. Another way I would use this gift would be to look into the minds of the insane so I could find a way to cure disorders such as schizophrenia and anxiety.

Hopefully I could shut it off - people can be very judgemental and mean-spirited. I would not want to know what most of them are thinking about me when I am with them....
Just imagine hearing this in your head all the time:
"Why is he wearing that shirt? It's so stupid!"
"I hope he doesn't think I was coming on to him - he's too skinny and I'll bet he has a small penis too..."
"I hate his voice... I wish he would just shut up..."
"I would rather be having sex with his best friend like I did last week... hanging out with him is such a drag..."
Yeah - it could be bad.
But on the plus side, it would be interesting to know what your boss thinks of you at work... you could move up in the company very quickly.

This would be far more a curse than a gift. Seeing fleeting thought without a context, unable to grasp the meaning or significance. Constantly bombarded by strange disjointed thoughts.
It would drive me insane.

To help find missing people and to help those that cannot talk or get their thought across due to an accident or whatever. I'd also use it to discover what the politicians really have on their mind when they run for election and to know if anyone is lying when they tell me something. Have to admit I would also use it to find out what people really think of me.

I would become a marriage counselor.
That much power and there is no point using it to get rich, I could always get by and that is enough.
Maybe I could help the police and courts determine who was guilty -- but only for serious crimes, or I could go to a bad part of town and help prevent muggings and shootings. I could go to the mideast and use it to track down webs of terrorists. It would be good if I could intervene to rescue children from abuse, but it might be unfair to the kids for me to know their thoughts and I'm not sure I'm mentally strong enough to know know what they go through. Then I would need counseling myself.

This is not as useful as it sounds.
People are telling you what they think in a thousand ways all the time. If you pay attention, you never have to wonder what goes on in their head. Its all out there.
