Both, you can do it orally or vaginally and you start right after your period is done, the trick is to do it first thing in the morning while you are still laying in bed, once you get up it does not work, because our temp change as soon as we get the first get up move so for best results do it vaginally and while still in bed. If you get a basal termometer the directions are there and they are pretty clear. A basal termometer is better because it can read the temp better it is more precised that a regular termometer.

Orally. First thing in the morning. Before you get out of bed, move, or anything. Start with day one of your period, that way you can chart a complete cycle. You have to make sure to have the BBT thermometer as well. I got mine at Walgreens for about $7

either way is fine, but DO NOT use the BBT orally if you have ever used it vaginally. ew.
there is no law in NFP saying you have to start temping on cd1 (first day of period). i started mid-cycle, just to get in the habit of temping at the same time everyday. make sure you temp at the same time every day to maintain consistancy. don't worry if you miss a temp ....you can always adjust it.
ETA...yes, temp first thing in the morning, before doing anything.

You can do it either way, but once you choose one, stick with it (I think vaginal temps tend to be a little higher, so if you were to switch it'd defeat the purpose of charting.) Your cycle starts the day your period starts, so start charting then.
