During a discussion about parenting between myself and some friends of mine, one of the other people told us that when her son was born she quit her job and got on food stamps and medicaid because she and her husband wanted her to be a stay at home mom. I think this is EXTREMELY irresponsible and told her so and the other people there seemed to disagree with me. Am I the only one who thinks that's leeching off the government?? If she wanted to be a stay at home mom they should have planned better before they got pregnant instead of relied on government assistance, shouldn't they??

I DO have children and I AM a stay at home mother- but my husband and I figured out our budget so we could afford to do it without government assistance. I don't think it's right to plan for a child that you can't and have no intentions of supporting without state aid.

I'm not against mothers staying home with their children.. if you'd actually READ the entire thing you would see that I already stated that I am also a Stay at Home mother.. but I don't think that during their duscussion about whether or not to try to conceive a child the idea of her quitting and going on government assistance should have even registered. I don't begrudge anyone the joy of parenthood, but I think it's something that shouldn't be planned on until you know you can take ALL of the responsibility yourself.

Don't you just love it when people aren't satisfied with the answers you gave for their questions, so they purposely give a negative answer to your question??? Grow up, some of you...

It is abuse of the system. The system isn't there so you can stop working when you want, it's there for people who really need it. When you go on welfare, both parents income counts, when it is a two parent family, so obviously, her husband doesn't make very much if they were still eligible. They should have taken this into account before having a child. The girl who made the comment about you not having kids so you don't understand, probably is another welfare moocher. I am a single mother of two, I am 24 years old, live alone with my kids, ahve a full time job and go to school full time. I was determined not to have to use welfare and have done that. It's people like that that give those who really need it a bad name.

There may be other considerations to be taken into account which you're not aware of or you haven't included in your reasoning. Let me ask you this. Is it more irresponsible to stay home to nurture and raise a child, or to give the child to another person eight or more hours daily while as a parent one pursues money and a career? Should a prospective parent delay childbearing until the couple has enough money to be able to afford the wife and mother staying home? How much money would this require? Are the people you're talking about in the upper income bracket? How long should a couple delay having a child? Why can't our society support mothers who stay at home to give children a good start in life? Why do both parents need to work outside of the home and what constitutes leeching off of the government?
I don't think you're alone in your views. But I do believe you're taking much too narrow a view of the situation from the little you've said here.

Obviously Jennifer you have all the support you need. How about taking into consideration that the woman was working before she had her son and while she was working she was helping someone else that needed help. Try to take into consideration that the government put these benefits into affect for this reason among others. One more thing, you are your brother's keeper and charity is a good thing.
No, I am not on welfare and I have qualified for it myself before; however, I felt that others needed the resources more desperately than I did and I passed the opportunity.
I hope one day you will see the light. I found out that whatever judgement you put on others will come back at cha. I hope you recognize it when it does.
Remember when you were instructed to stick with the question asked by Letustry? You jumped to conclusion on that one too!

I agree. and know of a worse family. They have 4 kids, 2 are on ssi and the other 2 aren't. so they get welfare, food stamps and medical. They also have their house paid for by the state. And they still begg for christmas gift from salvation army.

as for some other peoples remarks I DO HAVE CHILDREN and I have never and will never except the government to support me and or my family. This is a classic example of a left wing liberal government rip off of the hard working tax payers!
Good for you, support yourself and be an adult and you will go far in business!

You are right....I am against this abuse of MY tax money. I think she should be forced to do community service(as well as all others on govt dole) working in a daycare for low-income workers if she wants to continue to get 'free money'.
after all, nothing is free.

Its sad and your friends suck. These programs are perfect for people who need to get back on their feet (which with conservatives in office is probable alot of people). But not for leaches like them.
