Dos was the first of the PC operating systems. Someone said in the early days that IBM, which created PCDOS, and Microsoft which created MSDOS all were born from a mainframe operating system. But which one I do not know but the name Digital Equipment Corporation(DEC) comes to mind.

DOS was the operating system! My PC all the way back to the Tandy Color Computer ran on DOS.
If you are talking mainframes I have to check with my Dad if I can understand the technical data.

Actually, I think you have it the other way around - DOS was based on CP/M.
There were a couple of followers to DOS - most notible was DR. DOS. Not very successful.
OS/2 was an early graphical substitute for DOS that offered DOS capabilities.

Well, depends on how you define it. Windows 3.1 ran on TOP of DOS, but DOS was still the booting OS. Windows 95 replaced DOS, but essentially still used a DOS subsystem at its base level.
