I agree with Mark; you don't have to be in LA or NYC to have a career (and about clueless opinions. I'm a working LA actor and I don't drive). There are more jobs in LA and NYC, but there's also a lot more competition and the competion isn't even primarily about who's the best actor, it's about getting an audition slot so that you can show a casting director that you're the best for their needs. If you've already been to auditions in MD, you're probably doing as well as if you were in a major market.

How to pursue "major" acting? Work in every venue you can find right where you are until you are unquestionably the "go to" actor for your type. When you're the best in a small market, move to a bigger market. If you get seen before you're ready, you'll hurt yourself, potentially a lot. "Major" to me means, eventually LA or NYC, just be sure you're ready. And then don't be surprised at how slowly things move, it's like that for almost everyone. Somebody said "It takes 10 years to make an overnight success" and they're not far off.

I would think there are more auditions in D.C.

When you go on your next audition, before you leave the audition, ask the person auditioning you, for a business card. Wait a few weeks, write him/her and ask for suggestions on how to get an agent in Maryland. That way, perhaps, you can the best advice for working in the Maryland area.

It is extremely difficult to become a successful commercial actor. Not impossible, just difficult.
