This happens more often than a file being transferred. it depends on where the file is being transferred from (Example) is the person at work and behind a firewall? This will cause a file to kick out every time. Also a low wireless connection, DSL connection or dial up are also known causes for failure.

Sometimes when we use these type of free programs (paid ones too somtimes) we can get curupted file(s). Even one curupt file will create proplems in certain features or make it unusable. I suggest you first contact Windows Live customer service. Go through the help menu and follow the promps. You will be able to send them an e-mail. Fill out the form they provide completely, giving all the asked for information, then give a detailed description like you did here, of the problem you are experiancing.

If you don't get it fixed via customer service, you should try removing this instance of Windows Live Messenger, doing a search for orphaned files (which can occur anytime a program is removed from the system) then download and install a new instance of Windows Live Messenger. This should fix any problem you are having. I have done this with both Yahoo! messenger and Windows Live Messenger.

To do the search for orphaned files click Start-Search. On the window which opens click on 'all files and folders'. A new page will come up with three text boxes. In the top box type in "windows live messenger.exe" skip the second box and choose your C-Drive to search as this is where all programs are stored by default. Click Search and just wait. If nothing comes up great. If files do show up, right click on them, choose Properties and look at what it is to be sure it is a Windows Live Messenger file. It should be if it showed up in the search, but this just makes sure you don't mistakenly delete a non-windows live messenger file. You need to be really carefull as a windows based computer has a "windows messenger" which has nothing to do with the Windows Live Messenger. You may not be using that messenger but you also do not want to accidently delete a part of that program. So, just check the properties tab to be sure, if you are not sure just don't delete it.

After running the search and deleting any (if there is any) orphaned files go ahead and download and install a new instance of Windows Live Messenger. Don't worry about your contacts or any settings, everything will transfer into the new instance as soon as you put in your ID and Password the first time. K?

Good luck fixing your problem. Before you remove the messenger contact customer services and see if they have further ideas on fixing your problem. I just think it best you contact them before following any directions you get here.

Have you upgraded yet? For a couple of days, I couldn't get my updates and when it stops working, or it fails to do stuff, I check to see if it needs to be upgraded. Once I upgraded, my problems were solved.
