Most preachers try to convince their audience of whatever point they're trying to make. Most people in the choir are in the choir because they are committed and therefore, by extension, probably agree with whatever the preacher is preaching. Therefore, when someone tries to convince you of something that you already agree with, it is referred to as "preachin' to the choir." It's an old southern saying.

In church, presumably, the choir is already "saved", so it would be a better use of the preacher's time to preach to the heathen. That's where the expression comes from. You're already of the opinion or knowledge of the person speaking, so they are wasting their opinion or knowledge on you since you already understand them. They should explain it to someone else.
