No, not a conspiracy theory.... But I just looked at all the answers I gave so far and came to the conclusion that someone could make a pretty good profile of my lifestyle, knowledge, education, geography, income bracket, family life....(although we are anonymous, of course!)
Do you think Yahoo is selling a summary of all our answers to a marketing company? Or why else have they started this Q & A scheme?

this is a conspiracy theory and I don't think yahoo are doing this but I think companies can probably do surveys using the information on here. It depends how much information you are willing to give. If you are boring enough to give away your life story on yahoo answers, then that's a dilemma for you alone to think about. I think this service is brought about just for people to ask a quick question about a spontaneous dilemma, using up 5 points and gaining back 3 for choosing an answer and then contributing for 2 to get them back to square 1. And so the system works....
I don't think yahoo answers is intended to find out about peoples lives and their lifestyles.

It's a symbiotic relationship. Both you and Yahoo! get something out of the deal. Just like dating the opposite sex. They may get to know you and develop a pretty good profile of your lifestyle, but aren't you happy when they choose a gift that you want? (okay, dumb analogy). When marketing is targeted, you don't recognize it (that's when they're doing a good job). When you notice it...that's not good...

The conventional wisdom in the web world is that traffic somehow magically leads to profits, although the graveyard of recent history is full of companies that went belly up on that theory.

I'm guessing they eventually want to start showing ads on the answer pages, where the ads match the topic of the question, like Google Adsense.
