Being absolutely ruthlessly greedy
Actually, that strategy has backfired on me as well. I win probably 2/3 of the games I play. My strategy is to put all my guys in countries that block passage into others, that way I have the upper hand on both the defensive and offensive moves. Then, I take over countries behind where I have blocked (the south american countries for example).
Good luck, a good RISK game sounds fun right now. Haven;t played agressively since the USAF days...

here's a good strategy: In the beginning, when you're taking your starting territories, pick a continent (like Australia), and spread out from there. Try to prevent your opponent from blocking you in, forcing you to split your troops. If this happens, try to secure the area just beyond their blockade, forcing them to be surrounded. During play, when you get your reinforcments every turn, place your troops like so: 60% on front lines, 30% just behind front lines, 10% in the middle of your conquered territory, furthest from conflict. This will keep your front lines well-defended, and you can move some troops in if you lose a battle. If the tides turn and you start losing, the 10% that was placed in your middle countries will allow you to make a last stand. I have played against many opponents that did not fortify their inner countries, and once I broke through their defenses, I would usually win within five turns.

I would just have to say, Dominate the board and get as many territories as you can. Start somewhere in the middle of asia so that you can have space....OH yeah the most important be overly prepared and combine your pices early in the game
