You're hitting the root problem with traditional ad models - there's no way to test / track / prove the effectiveness of an ad.
That's one of the main reasons Google took off so fast - they made it simple for any advertiser to:
- tightly target their market (by keywords searched)
- track the effectiveness of any given ad (using web technology like cookies and Google's free tracking and reporting tools.
So now, advertisers are looking at the TV networks, who have no answer to that power.
In reality, there's always been the ability to use direct response techniques on TV or any other media, but "traditional ad business" didn't like that because they sell the myth of creativity and branding and repetition, and executives were too uninformed to argue back. I think you'll see that continuing to change, if slowly.

Because they hope to brainwash us unconsciously! And it works! OK we go do soemthing else but we still hear the sound even though we don't watch the actual commercials. Having said that ... I've known people not to move! Children are the worse!

Sad thing is most of us watch the ads...some of them have a good tune, which ends up staying in our head annoyingly and we end up humming away to it, in the bath at work or wherever....i have had conversation's at work about a tv add everyone thought was funny..so i guess it's sad but they do work!!
