Well it is a matter of an impossible comparison.

People are still original within a framework set out by society and media, but compared to what we might be like without all the standardized images of beauty and high-tech and cool-ness, etc. we might be less original and individual.

Media has taught us to judge by a certain set of standards that is in their best interests to promote (mainly for the reason of profit.) Perhaps if we didn't have such closed-minded judgements, we would see a wider variety of originiality and individualism. Before there was media "judgement-training" there was religious judgement-training and Kingly/Lordly judgement-training. The majority of people still feel the need to let others take responsibility for their lives. It is only when people can truly take full responsibility for every situation in their lives that they can eventually become entirely original individuals.

Sorry, long answer.
The short answer is...
It is very hard to tell.

While the mass media's job is to inform the public in an un-baised way, that doesn't happen. All news programs have their own agenda, which leads to forcing their own opinions on viewers. Even though most people don't know it, they're opinions are being shaped. For example, if one television station is Democrat, they can twist their newscast to make it seem like President Bush is doing bad things. The same goes for conservative TV stations. Mass media impacts everybody in many ways. In a round about way, media outlets can make the news be whatever they want. Keep that in mind.

No, in the days before mass media originality was also somewhat hampered, but by different influences. In ages past, people were forced to conform by church and community.

Don't know if it's taken away an individual's "originality" but I would say that mass media has contributed greatly to the acceptance of racist/classist stereotypes.

Not unless the person has no brain or no spine. The media are all into selling hype and controversy ( even where none exists)

Media only controls the distribution of the weirdness, not the creation.
