I believe it was made by scientists looking for a polio vaccine. One moment and I'll find the article. Just my personal opinion btw. Wikipedia states
According to the oral polio vaccine (OPV) AIDS hypothesis, the AIDS pandemic originated from live polio vaccines prepared in chimpanzee tissue cultures (at least some of which were almost certainly contaminated with chimpanzee SIV) which were administered to up to one million Africans between 1957 and 1960. The specific populations, who may not have been properly informed of the risks before volunteering for the vaccination, were the first in the world to experience HIV-1 infections and AIDS some five to twenty years later.
In particular the experimental oral vaccine, called CHAT, is claimed to have been contaminated with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), a group of viruses endemic to African primates and widely accepted as the origin of HIV. Recent evidence shows that CHAT may have been concentrated in African facilities using tissue cultures made from chimpanzee kidneys (more importantly, utilizing chimpanzee serum, containing macrophages, the target of immunodefficiency viruses).
Proponents of the OPV AIDS hypothesis include journalist Edward Hooper, as well as scientists Lous Pasteur and the late W.D. Hamilton.

No. According to snopes.com, it's an urban legend. See http://www.snopes.com/medical/disease/aids.asp for a whole list of bogus rumors circulating the Internet about the origins of HIV, ranging from the CIA to Hitler's experiments to Reagan, the Russians, etc. with various groups trying to wipe out other groups -- all bogus rumors. Scientists are now pretty sure that HIV crossed the species barrier from chimps to humans. But this was probably not in a lab. More likely in the wild where chimps and villagers come into contact with each other (many Africans eat monkeys and chimps.) Think about it: HIV first appeared in Africa (where chimps are wild) not among Western laboratory workers. And it first appeared among heterosexuals in Africa. Only by chance were the first cases among homosexuals in the USA and thereby spread in that population. If the first people to bring it to the USA had been hetero, no doubt we would have acted faster to respond to the epidemic. Homophobia definitely contributed to procrastination about finding the REAL cause of this disease.

I'm not 100% sure about HIV, but I know that when a disease from another animal crosses over to humans, the disease _can_ be 10 times worse. All the hype about bird flu, yup, that's why. When the disease crosses species, the new infected species does not have resistances set up or a way to get rid of the infection, so the disease can be really serious for the new host.

There is no evidence to support your theory. Various viruses mututate and can become anything. Even HIV already has several variations. I'm not sure they can ever be 100% sure where it came from. So why do you say "not Africa?" Everything I read tends to suggest it was a mutation of a virus normally restricted to apes.

Yeah I believe that. I heard it was from the mix of a human and a monkey gone wrong. I don't think it could be manufactured though.

They've proven where it came from, so yeah. If you don't want to accept it, that's fine, but don't feed people false information. You are part of the problem, not the solution.
Not_mn_nice, you have it dead on.
